Friday, 10-28-11

Today in math class we had absolutely no homework. Although we had no homework we had Mr. Freneau talk to us about an upcoming test that we have this Friday. (Nov. 4) He had us brought up to speed on what the test will be about, and what were supposed to do, so good luck to my entire fellow 8th graders. In English class we printed our patriotic essays and posted them to our individual blogs. Then for the rest of the class period we worked on our C.B.L (Challenged Base Learning) projects.  The purpose of those projects is to somehow learn about our topic of choosing and write to change the world in that particular topic. In Earth science we worked on our worksheet packets and waited for some other students to edit their imovie projects on one of Newton’s 3 laws. In history class today we had a review about Mexico and showed our PowerPoint’s to some of the students.  Study hall is pretty self-explanatory. In reading we had a test over dialogue and dialect. Also, we handed in our bookmarks on our books. For the rest of the class period we read our independent books. And for our 7th period classes just depend on which rotation you’re currently in. For 8th period though today was the last day of P.E. for boys in wrestling if you weren’t going out. For the girls today was the last day of P.E. for basketball if they weren’t going to go out. Yet again another day gone by for our school.

Another day, another dollar!  We all wish it were like this in the everyday life of an OHS 8th Grade student!  Today in our 8th grade English class we continued our practice with simple sentences.  We did two exercises with ten problems each on compound sentences and compound predicates.  Mrs. Troester helped us through this.  After we finished, we talked about the revision process for our Patriot’s Pen Essays with Mrs. Morrow.  During the rest of fourth period we were arranged in groups to get feedback on the good and bad things about our essays.  The day didn’t end there though.  We also at lunch in our lovely cafeteria and had a choice of mini corndogs, cavatina, or yogurt.  Along with this, we had a choice of corn and a salad bar with a few fruit and veggie selections.  Fall Break is quickly approaching and everyone is super excited to have a day off of school!  As the day comes to an end, we have all learned something new.  Whether it is how to do the Pythagorean Theorem or not to eat the yellow snow, we accomplished it.  We do work.

Today at O’Neill High it was an ordinary day. Eight classes about eight hours of boring all day school.  In English though we worked on simple sentences. We also did our write to change the world. We thought of some great ideas and had fun with it. For reading we worked on tone and our independent reading. For the independent reading we have to do a bookmark.
Science was a different story. We had to make videos. For the videos we used the topics: Newton’s three laws of motion. We only get one hour to do it in class. We did voiceovers and had a lot of fun. That was our ordinary day at O’Neill High School.

Monday, 10-24-11

by Miles Stagemeyer

It was another typical day at O’Neill High School.  Sadly, that is not the case in Turkey, as the death toll rises after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake took place. Today in Geography, we continued our study on Mexico and worked on our Mexican state project.  Our Geography answers for today were: Memphis and Los Angeles.  In math, we did a typical assignment.  In Reading, we read and did Teenbiz after discussing Lesson 9.  In English, we gave feedback on the writing forum and talked about prepositional phrases and infinitive phrases.  Study Hall and Band was same as always.  For lunch, you could have scalloped potatoes and ham or a hot pepperoni sub.  Although, I wouldn’t advise you to eat either of them.   Today in Science, we did the Banana Dance and talked about Newton’s three laws.  In Technology, we worked on our storyboards for our Personal Brand videos.  In Wrestling, we did our usual warm-ups and worked on our stances.

It was a good weekend to be a Husker!  The football team beat Minnesota 41-14 and the volleyball team beat number one ranked Illinois as well.  Around home, controversy over the Keystone XL Pipeline is still erupting as Gov. Dave Heineman called a special legislative session concerning the issue.  Today, students were surprised to see James aka “The Hammer” with a different hair color. James decided to dye it for his Charlie Sheen costume that he wore to Lydia’s Halloween Party.

Friday, 10-21-11

by James Walton

If in one word I could sum up what was in today's news this morning it would be chaos. Between what happened in Zanesville, Ohio this week and Gadhafi being killed in Libya I can't tell which situation is more crazy.
After Mr. Hostert, my geography teacher, showed us news clips online about these incidents, we went over our geography answers for the day: 49ers and Hawaii. Then we went over our tests on Canada and learned more about Mexico.
Nothing new to talk about for Algebra 1, unless someone wanted to hear about the game of ninja some of us played after our assignments were done.
On to earth science, Mr. Corkle was gone :( so we had Mrs. Schneider as a substitute teacher. We worked on packets (the third page was really confusing).
In English we to vocabulary tests and worked on sentence structure. Our vocabulary words for the week were: bedraggled, behoove, euphemism, evanescent, exacerbate, exemplary, opaque, opulent, ornate, and sequester. We learned about simple sentences, independent clauses, subjects, and predicates.
During band we watched the video of our performance at the football game the night before. The songs we played were: Hard Rock Blues, We Will Rock You, and Let It Rock.
Study Hall was the same as always, everybody doing whatever they needed to do, right before the period ended I sent the iPod with a friend to get pictures of the lunch because I had book club. At book club we had pizza (sausage and supreme) and talked about The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. When I saw the pictures after lunch I realized how glad I was to have pizza at book club the tomato soup looked pale and tasteless and the cheese in the sandwiches looked like rubber. During reading class we split into groups to talk about the book we had read; I had read both but had talked about American Born Chinese last week so this week I chose to talk about MAUS. After that we could either read our new book or work on our shelf and rate books we had read on Shelfari, I started working by rate both the books I had just read and then began to add books to my shelf.
In technology class we began with Mrs. Morrow, the teacher, showing us a TED talk called: Marco Tempest: The Magic of Truth and Lies (and iPods). Then we began working our personal brand (iAM) videos.
During P.E we played jail-ball in the wrestling room 7th grade vs. 8th grade both teams won one game and then we had one long one that we never finished.

Thursday, 10-20-11

by Libi Slack

Today is Thursday, October 20, 2011.  Nothing too exciting happened in Geography or Math, but in geography, Mr. Hostert showed us something that made the news. You can see it by clicking on this link: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/20/us/ohio-animals-on loose/index.html?iref=allsearch
In Reading today we learned about mood.  Finding the mood of a story or poem.  It can be difficult at times, but that’s why we’re practicing it.  In English, we learned about sentence structure and how it can affect our writing and how we speak.  When you use the vocabulary words you learn in school, outside of school it will make you sound smart.  Even if you use them in school, you’ll still sound smart.  That’s what we mainly learned in English today.  Study Hall is next after English.  During Study Hall, Mrs. Morrow brought in students and teachers from Cedar Rapids and they asked Mr. Hostert and our class a few questions.  Other than that in Study Hall was just a normal Study Hall.

At lunch Zach and Cameron tried to beat a record of how many pops they could drink in an hour, unfortunately for them, they got the pops they didn’t drink taken away.
To start off Science today we got a “Respect your temple” speech to go along with Zach and Cameron’s attempt to break the record of how much pop you could drink.  Then we got a “If everyone does it, no one will be weird speech” with a song. (Which was the highlight of the day.)

After the fun, we got straight to work and worked on grading the Cowboy Day Science video and then a Teenbiz was assigned for homework, but most of us got it done in class.
In Ag class, we read and had a short assignment.  Soon after class ended, there was yet another fire drill.  After the fire drill, we had P.E./Basketball.  We had our usual warm up and then did a few dribbling drills, shooting jump shots, and then did a little bit of conditioning.
Also, the football playoff score was O’Neill Eagles 20, St. Paul Wildcats 26.  That loss ended the season with a 2-6 record.  Good season, Eagles.

Most days are usually exciting and fun, but on October 20th, it wasn’t that exciting. In English second period, we mostly just posted on the forum and then we studied vocab. After that, Mrs. Troester explained to us how we need to get a good foundation right now in our writing. So, she handed out packets but right when we were about to start, the bell rang.
After English came reading. In reading Mrs. Troester gave us book hooks, which is when she tells us about books we might want to read for our independent reading. Soon after we worked on finding moods in our reading.
When lunch finally came around, we had a choice of ham and cheese, or something else I didn’t know the name of! (Yuck!) When the bell rang signaling that lunch was over, you can just see the disappointment on the kid’s faces.
But in sixth period, we graded videos that we had added science to. My group’s video was up next. Although I strongly dislike showing my work, Mr. Corkle made us do the banana cheer, which really does boost your self-esteem.
Ah, Business Trends, we explored the world of entrepreneurship. We learned more about the people in our community that have open a business based on a skill or something they have invented. Right at the end of the class, we had a fire drill. It was a short one compared to our regular drills. Next came P. E.
Basketball season has arrived, and the School has us try a sport for two weeks before we decide we don’t want it. Personally, I don’t like basketball. But it’s an interesting sport to watch.
When school was finally over, it turned out it wasn’t so bad after all. After school we had a game against St. Paul. And since it was our last game, it was parent’s night when they get to walk the seniors.

Today at O’Neill Public Junior-Senior high school I was the daily Blogger. It may not seem like a tough task but it is when a day was as normal as today was. In reading we picked out books to start reading. We also read an excerpt from Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry. In English we watched a power point and then broke into groups to do fun activities. We played a strange game on the IPods, made a super fast movie, and wrote up some questions for the class.

If you were gone today you truly did not miss out for lunch we had chicken nuggets that where dry and wrinkly according to Amanda Pischel. And Bailey Krieger’s were deformed. They put the chicken nuggets on tortilla’s I think they did that so they could get out of giving us 5 instead we got cheated with 4 chicken nuggets and a tortilla. What are you supposed to do with a tortilla?

Also be on the look out for kripl (Vionne) if you do spot her maybe give her a hand with her Mac. Vionne claims it puts her off balance. (She said I could only use her in my blog post if I wrote cripple, like Kripl.) Also don’t call her Cripple she is armed with crutches. In Mr. Corkle’s we started showing our imovie projects, we got to see Mr. Corkle’s Simon Cowell impersonation.

by Amanda Pischel

It all started out as a normal day in History where the geography answers were Canada and Pennsylvania.   Then we went to Math class where we had a test.   After are Math test was over we took the short walk to Reading class in room 220 were we got to look as some interesting books that we might like to read.   We had take a test in Reading class too, then we had to work in are Interactive Reader afterwards.   When Reading was over we just sat in are seats waiting to start English class since they’re in the same room.   We started English class with are usual analogies and then got working on are Patriot Pens.   Walker also found a grammar goof up for are poster of goof ups.

On my way to lunch I noticed a military officer sitting at a table.   I walked up to him and took a picture and asked him what he was doing.   He looked surprised when I took the picture then answered my question.   He said he was looking to recruit people for the army and he had some interviews to do with some people from are school.   After telling the solder that I wasn’t cut out for the army I walked in to the cafeteria where I was unpleasantly surprised by the smell of lasagna and hot dogs.   When lunch was over we went to Science class were Mr. Corkle sang a song that he wrote.   I got the song on video, but it won’t be out viral yet for about three to four weeks because he wants it to be exclusive.   Science class was cut short because we had to go to an assembly.   We ended are school day with an inspirational speech by Justin Lookadoo.

It's all the same. Nothing going on at O'Neill High. Well, except for English class. Today, we began to learn to make an essay for a Patriotic Essay.
It's a contest where you can write why your proud of your country. Mrs. Morrow explained the rules and how to get started on it.
One of the rules was that we could only have between 300-400 words. No more, no less.
We can also interview someone who has lived in this country for a while or someone who knows a lot of America's history.
We 8th graders should start thinking on our essay. Who knows what new surprise will enter the English classroom tomorrow. After all, everyday brings a new adventure.

Today in English we talked about our memoirs since the final draft is due tomorrow and studied for our vocab quiz. Before we took the quiz we studied with a new and fun way to learn the vocab, we studied with the iPod Touch, you have to go to iPhoto and click in the folder call 8th vocabulary. It first shows you the definition and then it tells you the word.  I hope next time that we have to study we use the iPod Touch.

Today in writing class we finished our memoirs and handed those in. At lunch to day we had pizza and macaroni the macaroni looked bad. The ninth graders got ice cream and brownies, YUM! Katelyn and Roni had a staring contest that was petty interesting.  In technology class we showed our cyber bulling videos and add those to our technology blogs.
On Saturday the JH girls had a volleyball tournament. The 7th grade girls lost both their games. The 8th grade girls lost both their games, too.

English class! Something we all attend at one point, dread it sometimes, and want to avoid it some days. But not here! Today in English class we separated into groups and read each other’s memoirs, giving advice and suggestions on revision. We discussed about giving feedback for people in our group for the Nebraska Writing Exchange, and how to do so.

Outside of class however, is something constantly going on. We always forget how much the office and office staff does for us. They pretty much keep the school organized and running. They help us whenever we’re lost or looking for someone or something.

It is once again another day at O’Neill High School that has come and gone, and they’ll always be here to get up early in the morning to teach some of that English.

Thursday, 10-13-11

by Ladonna Lanz

Today during math we all got done early. Mr. Hilker got mad because we were all being LOUD.
In English we got to share our memoirs with two other people in the class.
My phrase of the day is" crazy madness."
Riley says that the zombie phenomenon  is more in than the vampire vs. Werwolf.
In science today we had to work in groups to answer the questions on pages 304-307 for today and tomorrow. Today in science Mr. Corkle was singing different songs. Tomorrow Mr. Corkle is not going to be here. :(
The geography answers for today were Texas and Gettysburg. In history today we studied more about Canada. It is amazing how much Canada looks like America.
For lunch we had chili and chicken sandwiches.
In reading class today we got in groups and finished our talk about the excerpt from the monkey's paw.
In tech we have both our videos due tomorrow.
That's all for today remember to check the class blog every morning for updates on what's going on.

Today in English class we worked on our CBL.  CBL stands for “Challenged Based Learning” meaning we are learning and writing about different challenges around the world such as war, world hunger, and child abuse.
It was an average day in school.  The 8th graders that have a 9th grade math class had a test today, but besides that it was average.       The FFA kids went to Valentine for a livestock-judging clinic today as well.
This Friday the O’Neill Eagles play Boone Central.  The game starts at 7 o’clock and they play at Boone Central.  Good Luck and go eagles!

Wednesday 10-12-11

by Grant Johnston
Today in English we got into our CBL groups and talked about our topics. Some of the topics are; Underage Drinking, Bullying, Hunger and Poverty, Brain Injuries, Suicide and Depression, Animal Abuse, and Abortion. These are the topics that 7 teams are trying to make a difference on. Everyday people just like us 8th graders are fighting to save the world!

Today in the world Canada is not reasoning to move the pipeline route. I wish they would so there would be no more arguments between the Canadian government and the farmers. I mean, why can’t they just move it so this problem will be solved!! Obama is also tried to pass a bill that would kill some sort of job package. However, the Senate voted against it and won! That’s the main struggle in our world today.

In lunch the other day we had a chef come in and make us Tai Noodles and Chicken. I didn’t like it, but again, that ‘s just my opinion! They said next month he will be making something Italian, I can’t wait for that!!
